南非第一個民選總統、諾貝爾和平獎得主納爾遜．曼德拉（Nelson Mandela）於 2013 年12月5日去世，享年九十五歲。曼德拉因對抗南非種族隔離制度坐牢廿七年，於1990 年獲釋，四年後當上總統，任期到了他決定卸任，這樣的舉動在非洲政界從未發生，在國際政界也非常少見。

Mandela曾被南非政府囚禁多年，但這沒有摧垮他，反而使他變得更堅強。Mandela出獄的那一天，對曾經多年虐待他的三位獄卒這樣說:「在走出囚室，經過通往自由的監獄大門的那一刻，我已經清楚知道，如果自己不能把悲傷和怨恨留在身後，那麼我其實仍在獄中。」

1994年他成為南非首位黑人總統，在總統就職典禮上，他邀請三位獄卒來參加，他們在過去27年曾經殘酷無情地虐待過他。Mandela在典禮上這樣介紹他們三個：「我年輕時脾氣非常暴躁，在獄中，正是靠他們三位的幫助，我才學會了控制情緒。」

Mandela在他的自傳中，其實留下許多「至理名言」，顯出他的聪明睿智和寬容度量，下面是他一些經典的話，很值得我們學習和思考。

我不是聖人，只是一個不斷努力改進的罪人。（I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.）

仇恨使頭腦不清，使計畫受阻。領袖是沒有仇恨的空間。（Hating clouds the mind. It gets in the way of strategy. Leaders cannot afford to hate. ）

如果人們學會恨，那他肯定也能學會愛，愛而比恨更勝一籌。（If they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite. ）

沒有人是生下來就會恨（No one is born hating…）

默默帶領他人- 讓他們相信自己走在前頭。（Lead from the back — and let others believe they are in front. ）

在這個世上寬恕比報復能成就更多事。（You will achieve more in this world through acts of mercy than you will through acts of retribution。）

我憎惡種族歧視因為我認為那很野蠻，不論是來自黑人或白人。（I detest racialism because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.）

在事情未成功之前，一切總看似不可能。（It always seems impossible until it’s done）

勇敢的人不是不會感到恐懼而是戰勝恐懼。（The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.）

據說沒進過一個國家的監獄就不能真正了解這個國家。 （It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails.）

當我走出囚室、邁過通往自由的監獄大門時，我已經清楚，自己若不能把悲痛與怨恨留在身後，那麽我其實仍在獄中。(I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.)

攀上一座高山後，你才會發現，原來還有更多的山頭等著你  (After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.)

在我的國家，要當上總統，得先待過監獄一回。（In my country we go to prison first and then become President.）

不要用我的成功來評價我，用我跌倒又爬起來的次數來評價我。（Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.）

開心或難過的經歷都可以幫助一個人成長。（It is in the character of growth that we should learn from both pleasant and unpleasant experiences. ）

我從未失敗，要麽贏要麽成長. （I never lose. I either win or learn）

仇恨就像是自己喝下毒藥，卻希望能毒死他人。（Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies. ）

工作熱情助人成功和出人頭地。（Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.）

在我之前，多少人為這個國家附上代價；在我之後，也是如此。（Many people in this country have paid the price before me and many will pay the price after me.）

我喜歡思想獨立的朋友，因為他們可以幫助你從不同角度看到問題所在。（I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.）
